  • Brian Skerry — National Geographic Magazine

    Photograph by Brian Skerry

I’ve been diving for about 30 years, and I can honestly say that I’ve had some amazing encounters with sharks, squids, and other whales. But the encounter with the right whales in the Auckland Islands was probably the best thing I’ve ever done. It was just that amazing.

  • B: An Interview with Dan Price

    dp6.jpg

Dan Price is the author of Moonlight Chronicles, a journal of his life which he has been hand drawing and distributing since the early 90s. Before that he worked as a photojournalist for numerous newspapers and was perhaps the only staff photographer in the country to regularly use Diana cameras on assignment

  • A Conversation with Andreas Gefeller (Conscientious)

    AndreasGefeller01.jpg

Andreas Gefeller is a German photographer well known for his series Supervisions, which pushes the boundaries of photography by elevating the view point off the ground. I have been extremely interested in Andreas’ work for a long time, and I recently had the chance to talk to him about it.

  • DOUBLE CROSS: BJ Papas – NYHC Photographer

    TheWayItIS.jpg

BJ Papas may be the most legendary photographer of NYHC. Pretty cool considering the bad rap hardcore has always gotten for the lack of female involvement. Seemingly elusive and interview-shy despite still photographing bands and being connected to the scene which she grew up in, we were psyched as hell to be able to chat with her.

  • A Photo Editor – The Next Generation Of Photo Editors

I think the way clients and photographers communicate and reach each other and the job of Photo Editor will profoundly change in the next decade. There’s exciting technology to take advantage of and the potential of the internet has barely been tapped by publishers. I wanted to start talking with .com and junior Photo Editors to look at the way they’re using technology and get a feel for what the future might bring.

  • A Conversation with Peter Granser (Conscientious)

    PeterGranser01.jpg

When I received a review copy of Peter Granser’s Signs in the mail, I had quite a few questions about the work. And since I had always admired his earlier work about Alzheimer patients, I asked Peter whether he would be up for a conversation.

  • A Photo Editor – Simon Barnett, DOP at Newsweek Prepares for the Olympics

With the Olympics just around the corner I thought I’d check in with Simon Barnett of Newsweek, because he’s hired his very own dream team of photographers (Laforet, Miralle and Powell) to provide coverage of the event.

  • Shoot! Interview: Dan Saelinger Self-Promotes – Shoot The Blog

    danSaelinger_14-thumb-522x358 1.jpg

I received an introductory email from Dan Saelinger the other day (that’s him, above). Turns out he shot the cover of July’s Self-Promotion themed PDN, and was using some newly-inspired guerilla tactics to get himself out there; he sent me some promos and said some humorous things. And you know what– it worked! Saelinger turns out to be an incredibly affable guy, and was kind enough to share some knowledge about his journey through the wilds of this industry we call photo.

  • A Photo Editor – What’s Up With Alec Soth

Alec Soth wrote a seminal photography blog (here) then one day up and quit. And, I’m not talking “hey, I’m getting tired of this s* I think I’ll pull back a bit,” I’m talking Bermuda-triangle-sudden-radio-silence quit. I always figured the man’s got his reasons and we’ll leave it at that. But, after you’ve been on the sharp end of a blog for awhile the reasons present themselves and I started to develop theories about it. I decided to ask him “what’s up.”

  • A short conversation with the new Magnum nominees Olivia Arthur and Peter van Agtmael – the photo blog of Magnum Photos

A week ago, during the 61st Annual General Meeting of Magnum, two new nominees were welcomed into the circle of Magnum Photographers. One day of the AGM is reserved to look at submitted portfolios and to decide upon new nominees, associates and members.

English photographer Olivia Arthur (28) and American-Dutch photographer Peter van Agtmael (27) are the new nominees for 2008.

  • John Moore – The Digital Journalist

    jm02.jpg

If the photojournalism community can be said to be a network of extraordinary witnesses, it is interesting to see one of those individuals rise to prominence within the community itself. Such is Getty photographer John Moore, who in his second decade of international work has emerged as one of the finest photojournalists of his generation.

  • Matt Eich: The Good Struggle – Shoot The Blog

    eich7 1.jpg

You’re 20 years old. You’ve just won the College Photographer of the Year award, and then your girlfriend becomes pregnant. Is this the beginning or the end? Matt Eich picked up his camera and precociously declared, “Nothing good comes without some sort of struggle.”

Not only is Matt an Eddie Adams Workshop alumnus, but he won the top prize in 2006 — a $10,000 grant from Nikon, the primary sponsor of the workshop to follow his own vision and shoot what he wanted. If Matt is representative of the new guard of photojournalists, we’re in good shape.

  • Election Violence in Zimbabwe: The Story Behind the Photo

    nytscan.jpg

The photograph was a stunner. Displayed across four columns at the top of Page One of Thursdays New York Times, the image showed a baby boy with casts on both legs, the apparent victim of the violence marking the presidential election in Zimbabwe.

In these times of mass video delivery and saturation of visual messages, this still image offered cause to pause. It demanded attention, insisting that readers and viewers not look away.
