For the past week or so I’ve been spending some time playing around with the photosharing site 500px and am really starting to like it. The site has been around awhile (since 2003) but went through some major redesigns, most notably in the Fall of last year. The result seems to be a very elegant photosharing community that is far more focused on fine art and artistic oriented photography than Flickr is.

Gary Copeland: SXSW Music Festival and Rock Photography
Gary Copeland, a commercial photographer based in Los Angeles, specializes in shooting the contemporary music scene, covering on-stage performances and the backstage life of bands and individual performers. Gary recently returned from the South by Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas where he shot live performances of bands on the Volcom Entertainment record label. He has used a variety of cameras over the years including Leica M6s, but now shoots almost exclusively with Leica M9s. Here’s a first-person account of his work and the personal motivations that drive him to pursue his mission.

Leica & Magnum: Past Present Future

For over 60 years, Magnum photographers have traveled around the world with their own agendas carrying their camera of choice, which was more often than not a Leica. These photographers produced iconic images of major world events including wars and revolutions, as well as everyday scenes of the world at work and at play. Magnum has allowed these photographers to share their unique visions and, as Alice George mentions in the video, Leica has become Magnum’s “passport to the world.” Leica and Magnum’s shared history and common mission gave rise to a technological and photographic collaboration which Alfred Schopf, CEO Leica Camera AG, and Magnum photographer Jonas Bendiksen, President of Magnum Photos International Inc., signed into being in December 2010 and was announced in February 2011.

Otto Schulze On The Leica X1
Otto Schulze runs a full-time fine art wedding photography studio based out of Denver, Colorado. He gets to travel all over the world to document that special day in the lives of his clients. Otto does not manage to capture all the beautiful emotion, anticipation and expectation of each wedding day on his own, however. He relies on the team of the Leica M9 and new 35mm f/1.4 Summilux ASPH lens, his equipment of choice. Recently, Otto had the opportunity to field-test the Leica X1 and share his thoughts with us.

The Leica Historical Society of America took the ultimate Leica trip for our most recent annual meeting last September … Germany! We chose Wetzlar, the original location of the Ernst Leitz Company, as our home base for the week. We toured a number of historic sites in the area, had a wonderful cruise on the Moselle including a winery tour and spent a day at the Photokina show in Cologne, but the real highlights for me were the Leica Factory tour of the production facility at Solms and the day I spent at the Leica Akademie.
