If you approach the M9 as you would do with a 1Ds or a D3, you miss the point. The C/N approach is to optimize the camera software to improve the results and to use a lowpass filter to mask the defects. The Leica approach is to show the physical/optical limits of the camera and let the user decide. I find this a more sympathetic way of practicing photography.

so … when i mentioned that i was gonna shoot this particular premiere, valentine’s day, one of my friends asked if i thought a leica s2 would be interesting to shoot. almost 38 megapixels. i’m used to 20 or so but … 38? there was only one lens available and since i wasn’t gonna be roaming i wondered if the 2.5/70 sumarit would be enough. it wasn’t like i was on an assignment-assignment so … whatever. it’s all good. having shot one of the h2’s i thought it’d be slow.
I’ve been saying for a few months that oh yeah that Leica M8 looks okay, but with a $6,000 price tag before you even get to the glass, who needs it. But you know what? I need it. I need it bad.

I am a fan of Leica cameras and lenses. But being a fan of something doesn’t mean accepting it without comment or complaint. Far from it. In fact fans are often a team or product’s most vocal critics. The reason being – because we care.
With that up front and out of the way, here is what I am describing as an Open Letter to Leica. I could of course send it directly to the senior managers that I know there, but I think that the ideas that I’m putting forward are worth a public debate, and that hopefully a lively and open discussion has a better chance of accomplishing something than a closed one.
