This just in regarding the rumored new Leica 35mm Summilux lens: Will have a floating element construction to reduce focusing shift to nothing. Will be on the market in March, 2010. Will have screw lens hood like the Elmar 24. Will be a little bigger than
There is a strong rumor that Nikon, Canon and Sony are developing mirror-less compact cameras with APS-C sensor sizes. The Leica X1 foreshadows this development. For Leica the X1 is a bold step and this could be a very promising one, but only when the camera offers interchangeable lenses and a redesigned set of functions. One could even imagine a digital CL with the M8 sensor size.
Update #2: the domain name cw-sonderoptic.de is registered to Rainer Schnabel (perform a whois check for cw-sonderoptic.de) and of course he works for Leica: see this Google search. Update: a picture of some of those Leica cine lenses could be seen here (
I am quite fortunate in having been able to use almost every Leica lens since 1925, but I actually own a very small fraction of all the lenses ever made.

Through the generosity of the Rocky Mountain regional Leica rep, I had the chance to take Leica’s new full-frame, 18 megapixel rangefinder with me to Southeast Asia this month. It was a great chance to really use a camera thoroughly for evaluation. They loaned it to me mostly because I have one on order, and it wouldn’t be delivered before the trip.
UPDATE: According to Leica US, the X1 camera will be on time for the scheduled January 2010 delivery. This rumor is busted for now. Arlingtoncamera just confirmed the news to LR: their Leica rep has told them that the Leica X1 will be delayed until Februa
I never had the chance to update my DL4 since the latest firmware update was removed shortly after it was announced. The rumor is that there could be more than the originally described French language issue with that firmware update (the information below
If there’s been one welcome development in 2009, it’s the rise of relatively compact cameras with large sensors (i.e. APS-C, or the smaller Four Thirds size). For a long time Sigma seemed to be the only company willing to take a gamble on there being a ge
as I get older I am getting a bit lazier, and while as little as five years ago I’d think nothing of hiking all afternoon with a 30lb camera pack, along with a heavy tripod and ball head on a shoulder sling, not so much anymore.

Kamera & Bild reports that Leica has decreased the production of the Leica X1 camera and increased the production of Leica M9. As mentioned in the article, new cameras sell best right after the official announcement and long waiting times could discourage

I once read a review of a new Mercedes in a car magazine which described it as having been “carved from a solid block of unobtainium”. That’s how the S2 feels to me.
I don’t think that I’ve ever described a camera as sensuous, but with the S2 I’m tempted to. Though it’s a large camera, it feels “right” in ones hands. Every photographer that I handed the S2 had the same reaction – an instant smile.
There was a lot of confusion about the Leica student program and I received a tons of emails on this topic. I am taking this post down until I can get a clarification on all the details. Related posts: Leica’s student/educator program is now discontinued
