One year after first testing the Leica M9, Jonathan Eastland finds there’s still room for improvement from this “nearly perfect” digital rangefinder. But short of some adjustments to body shape and JPEG reproduction, the greatest development has been the introduction of the Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH

Returning to the Leica Rangefinder Fold
The disease progressed quite rapidly. The initial infection, the X1, occurred in August. By September a Leica M9 was on order and the fever was beginning. By October, a 35 mm Summilux ASPH joined the M9 and from then on it was all downhill. The fever only abated after I’d picked up a bunch of lenses. Finally I was back in the Leica fold, after a twenty-year absence.

Why the Leica M9 is a better camera (video)
Mr. McConnell’s story, which includes 50 images, won a World Press Photo award this year but has yet to be exhibited outside Spain. Mr. McConnell, who is represented by Panos Pictures, worked for three years as a press photographer in Northern Ireland before traveling through Australia, Asia and Africa, where he is based. He spent four months photographing and interviewing the Sahrawis in refugee camps and in the Polisario-controlled Western Sahara.

Charlie Kirk: Tokyo. Leica. Flash.
Charlie Kirk describes himself as “a 37-year-old English guy, working as a lawyer in Tokyo.” Based in Japan’s capitol for 9 years, he was educated at Sussex, Cambridge and Nottingham, and notes wryly “It’s a long process to become a lawyer.” A talented and avidly committed photographer with a knack for capturing the surreal quality of everyday life with his Leica MP and M9, he hopes to turn his newfound photographic passion into something more than a fulfilling avocation. Here, in his understated and commendably straightforward words is the fascinating story of his photographic adventure.

David English: The Versatile 24 Lux
If you could have only one lens, what would it be? For me, that lens would be the Leica Summilux-M 24mm. It’s a wide-angle lens that isn’t too wide for most purposes. It’s extremely sharp across the frame with no red or cyan corner issues. When opened up to f/1.4, you can use it for most interior shots. Best of all, I like the versatility of the lens. You can use it for clean, almost clinical shots, where everything needs to be clear with a minimum of distortion

Interviews with Andreas Kaufmann and Stefan Daniel – Leica Rumors
The Invisiblephotographer published an interview with Andreas Kaufmann taken after the M9-P announcement. This is the recap: The new 25,000 square meter facility Leitz Park 2 will be able to double the products turnover over the next 4 years. Dr. Kaufmann on the Leica M10: “Usually, this industry has cycles in the 2-years range, which is […]

Dr. Kaufmann on the Leica M10: “Usually, this industry has cycles in the 2-years range, which is usually Photokina. So if people were to come to Photokina in 2012, maybe they may see something“.

Leica S2 as Travel Camera
I read with great interest Mark Dubovoy’s account of using his S2 in Africa instead of the usual big lens DSLRs. By sheer coincidence, I have been out of the country too, putting my S2 through its paces as a travel camera on a workshop in Western China and I thought I’d share some of my experiences – listed here in no particular order.

All black camera body with no red dot or any other markings on the front, there will only be a Leica Monochrome engraving on the top plate (similar to the M9-P). The M9-M will basically be a M9-P but with a monochrome sensor.

Leica M9 Monochrom
M Leicas are a niche product. Ignoring collectors for the moment, these cameras are for people who understand and appreciate the gestalt of rangefinder shooting. A digital M Leica is also old school, though having digital and old school in the same sentance may at first seem an oxymoron. Prime lenses, manual aperture ring and shutter speed dial, and little else. Just what you need and little more. But the Leica Monochrom is even older school because it hearkens back to the days of shooting B&W film. Put the two together and you have a niche product within a niche.

With the goal of creating a lens that fully achieves the opportunities offered by high-resolution camera systems, Leica engineers have successfully redefined the limits of what is technically possible. The result is an extremely high-performance lens that sets entirely new standards and currently stands as an exceptional talent amongst the standard lenses of the Leica M portfolio.

Bruce Davidson: Thoughts On A Lifetime With Leica
Bruce Davidson: A Lifetime with Leica
Renowned photojournalist and Magnum photographer Bruce Davidson has been acclaimed for over half a century for his searing images of street gangs, circus performers…

Well, there are two things I’ve never done: I’ve never been under fire in a war and I never learned how to open my eyes underwater. For example, I had a fashion assignment on the beaches of Miami, but there were Portuguese Man O’ War jellyfish so we couldn’t jump into the surf as planned. So the art director said to me, “Bruce, let’s rent a motel pool,” and I said, “That’s a great idea!” He replied, “OK, I’ll rent an underwater camera.” I dove in with this waterproof camera to take pictures of these actors playing with the new fashionable stretch fabric clothing, but I never opened my eyes underwater. When I got out of the water, the actors asked how it looked and I said, “It’s beautiful!” When the pictures were edited, there were headless people — headless children without arms, women with half their heads gone, etc. The art director said, “This is brilliant work. This is superb! How did you do it?” I never told them, to this day, that I had never seen a thing

I have scanned thousands of B&W frames in my day and I am saying with 1000% conviction that the files I am seeing from the Monochrom are the closest I have ever seen any digital come to film but not 35mm film because they look more like rich medium format files.

A Fetishist’s Guide to the Monochrom
When Leica asked me to shoot with the Monochrom and articulate my impressions, I knew I could follow one of two paths: either I could look at the camera strictly within the confines of my own specific fetishes, or I could use it more liberally in situations where I wouldn’t normally be motivated to take photos. Because the latter path would benefit a wider range of sickos photographers, it became my roadmap for this series of articles.
