Norwegian black metal is the country’s most controversial musical export — and bane of the wooded Scandinavian enclave’s existence. Dealing as it does with Satanism, arson and murder, the music remains mostly underground; America’s general knowledge of Norwegian rock still starts with a-ha and ends with Royksopp. But recent interest in the notorious subgenre, including the new documentary Until the Light Takes Us and Peter Beste’s just published True Norwegian Black Metal, is shining a new light into the darkness.

Today’s mp3 is the most spectacularly awful music I’ve heard in a while, a kitsch epic. But there’s more to it then just that.

That’s because today’s music is by the infamous Tony Alamo, in the news yet again, this time for kiddie porn. The FBI raided his Arkansas compound. Sure, he’s in the South now, but I remember when we had him here in Los Angeles. I discovered one of his tracts on a school bulletin board over 20 years ago and have been following the man’s exploits ever since.

“You’ve never heard anything like this!” is, for the most part, an overused and meaningless phrase, that is unless you happen to be talking about Confessor. Their debut album, Condemned, is one of the most uniquely bizarre metal records I’ve ever heard. A brilliant mix of seemingly incongruous elements Confessor’s deranged sound is truly unforgettable. Imagine a vocalist that sounds like a woman screaming for her life, doom riffs so heavy and crunchy they’d make Candlemass green with envy, and serpentine drumming so complex and off-kilter it’d make Tomas Haake’s head spin. Released back in 1991 on Earache Records, it’s easy to see how Condemned flew over everyone’s heads

If clothes make the man, do tight clothes make the man a homosexual? A Brooklyn-based rap group thinks the current trend in hip-hop—medium tees and sagging jeans cinched tightly below the hips—is causing some confusion. And they are not alone.

Members of the rap group Thug Slaughter Force—three brothers and two friends calling themselves Drama, Filthy, Tempa, Rebel, and Blanco the Don—walk the streets of Brooklyn in XL T-shirts with the words “Tight Clothes” slashed through with a red stripe: their message of protest against what they see as the move away from traditional baggy clothing and toward tighter-fitting outfits in today’s hip-hop. The “No Tight Clothes” campaign is their latest idea in a decade of trying to make it in the rap game.

Ask Conrad Lant – whose working name is Cronos – if he sees any parallels between the absurd events chronicled in This Is Spinal Tap, and the experiences enjoyed by Venom, the legendary heavy metal group he has fronted, on and off, for almost 30 years, and he is instantly dismissive. “That movie was never pointed at us,” says the singer/bassist, evenly but firmly. “It was aimed at bands like Saxon, and Samson, and Iron Maiden. They all lived that ludicrous lifestyle; we never did. We were always down to earth, we always had friends who’d give us a slap if we got too full of ourselves.”
