Trained as a photojournalist, Hollyman specialized in travel photography for many years, shooting for Holiday and Town and Country magazines. He also served as the director of photography for the 1963 movie version of Lord of the Flies.

Magnum's Dennis Stock, 81
“I’ve never taken an assignment,” Stock said when he addressed a gathering of photojournalism students at the University of Texas in Austin’s School of Journalism in 2009. “I’ve always photographed what I wanted to be photographing, and then worried about selling the pictures or doing something with them afterwards. I’ve always shot for myself, and when you’re shooting what you’re interested in shooting, you’re always going to be happy,” Stock told Magnum photographer Eli Reed’s students.

LIFE Photographer Myron Davis, 1919-2010
Davis’s archive contains thousands of subjects, including a photo essay on an Iowa farm boy and his dog, the last photos of film comedienne Carole Lombard at an Indiana war bond rally (her plane crashed on the way back to California), as well as portraits of General Dwight Eisenhower, President Franklin Roosevelt, and famed photojournalist Robert Capa reading in a bathtub, among many, many others.

National Geographic Freelance Photographer Wes Skiles Dies – NatGeo News Watch
“National Geographic has learned of the tragic death of Wes Skiles, the accomplished underwater photographer, cinematographer and explorer with whom we’ve worked frequently,” the National Geographic Society said in a statement today. “The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident, which occurred following the conclusion of a scientific research expedition related to marine life off the east coast of Florida. Our thoughts are with Wes’ family.”

He was 64.

As recently as yesterday, Hetherington tweeted about “indiscriminate shelling” by pro-Qaddafi forces in Misrata, and he sent an e-mail to a Vanity Fair editor: “Am currently in misrata – would have made interesting article with SJ” (meaning Junger).

The Chris Hondros photograph that changed me
I remember my mother pulling a picture out of our local Seattle Times newspaper for me, running large on the third page. A news picture tucked inside the paper, sitting on its own, was odd to see. It was as if the editors thought they had to get a great picture published even if it wasn’t ‘newsworthy’ for a local paper. I was blown away, I’m sure I said outloud that this picture would win a Pulitzer.
