I became fascinated with Brad Elterman’s classic rock imagery (and amazing caption-writing) from the ’70s and ’80s at the inception of this blog, and was recently in touch with him about  his current activities. He continues to shape the paparazzi industry from the inside– he’s now a co-founder of Buzz Foto.

    A little Q&A follows.

  • A good year for the paparazzi? Just ask Amy and Peaches | Life and style | The Observer

Every morning Paul Convery walks out of his front door to be confronted by piles of discarded coffee cups and sandwich wrappings. There is an unmistakable stench of urine. The pavements are filled with stocky, intimidating men with glowering expressions and the parking spaces have all been taken by battered 4x4s that have not paid or displayed.

‘The neighbours down the road are woken nightly at around 3am by the sounds of taxi doors slamming, shuffling of feet, shouting and excitement,’ he says. But this is no unexplained urban menace: this is the modern paparazzi at work. Convery has the misfortune to live on the same north London street as Peaches Geldof, the ubiquitous celebrity poppet whose picture is much in demand from tabloid newspapers and glossy magazines.

Freelance photographer Luc Goursolas said he broke a guard’s finger and bit another until he bled, and that they hit him with a walkie-talkie, punched and kicked him, leaving a head wound that required three stitches.

“I was pouring blood. I threw myself at them, put blood all over them, and told them that I had HIV so they would stop hitting me,” Goursolas told The Associated Press on Friday.

Now you can bask in the spotlight of your very own red carpet experience, without the indignity of having yourself splattered across the brain-numbing pages of fatuous magazines. These nine members of the worlds snapping media come complete with the ethical and moral depth of an earthworm, are blissfully mute, and will make you feel as adored and sought-after as you no doubt should be. Become a legend in your own lunchtime, a super-star in your sitting room, or a diva at your desk. And best of all, if the paparazzi get on your nerves, you can satisfyingly stamp on ’em without fear of them whimpering off to file a suit against you. Fame without any of the drawbacks.

  • Has Ashton Kutcher 'Punk'd' the paparazzi? – USATODAY.com

    kutcherx 1.jpg

“He’s really changed my life,” Paris Hilton told paparazzi from her car, adding she offered the necklace “because the greatest gift is to give.”

Turns out, as some outlets later discovered, the “mystic” was an actor named Maxie Santillan Jr., who has appeared on CSI and My Name Is Earl. And though some accused Hilton of getting Punk’d, the joke’s on them: The entire scene was staged for a new show from Punk’d producer Ashton Kutcher premiering Sunday on E! (10:30 ET/PT).

Pop Fiction, an eight-episode series, is a prank show targeting paparazzi and gullible media outlets. It’s made with the eager help of stars, who were the laughing stocks of Kutcher’s former MTV show. This time the shoe’s on the other foot, and the series has been kept so tightly under wraps that E!’s own website fell victim to the Hilton hoax and other planted stories that producers won’t yet divulge

Increasingly, nonprofessionals are positioning themselves alongside press photographers, said Brian Ach, a full-time freelancer for celebrity-photo agency WireImage, which is also owned by Getty. “It becomes difficult when there are marked spots for traditional agencies at an event, and somebody with a little point-and-shoot shows up and says, ‘Well, I’m with so-and-so Web site,” he said. “It happens at every single event.”

Another professional photographer, Nancy Kaszerman, said shooting celebrities on the street means “fighting off the cellphones.” At a recent Hotel Gansevoort party in New York, so many “TMZ-type” paparazzi crowded Ms. Jolie that she couldn’t pose for a picture, Ms. Kaszerman said. “They were basically on top of her. They didn’t use their lenses or their zooms,” she said. “In the past, photographers would’ve given her some breathing room.”

  • Shooting stars in Berlin – Reuters Photographers

    hawn.jpg

    :

The Berlinale film festival in February opens the annual season in the winter cold of the German capital. Paparazzi stalk stars outside restaurants and hotels all looking for exclusive pictures. We concentrate more on the daily photo calls, press conferences and the red carpet premieres at the festival cinema. I have covered the festival nearly every year since 1991 and things have changed a lot in that time. Where there used to be only a couple of dozen of us at press conferences and premieres but today in the digital age there are at least 100 accredited photographers producing tens of thousands of images every day from the Berlinale.

  • To pap or not to pap? – Reuters Photographers

    madonna-mumbai 1.jpg

    :

And everytime Madonna’s car stopped it would send photographers and cameramen into a frenzy – abandoning their vehicles on the roads and rushing towards her car with cameras hanging from their shoulders. It was surprising that no photographer got injured, either as a result of the crush or the baton-wielding policemen.
This time too, most of us had no choice. Either we follow her and get her pictures or not get pictures at all. And irrespective of the organisation we belonged to, considering this news-worthy ,we all followed her, though with varying degrees of intensity. It made by stomach churn, to see some enthusiastic bikers almost come in the way of Madonna’s speeding carcade.
