BP maintains it followed “industry practice that is required by federal law.” I would like to see this federal law challenged in court because I have a feeling taking photos of a public street is a constitutionally protected activity.

"Perfect Uncertainty – Robert Adams and the American West" (2002)
Robert Adams is preeminent among the many photographers who have concerned themselves with the urban development of the once-wild lands of the American West. He began to photograph on the Colorado high plains in 1965, and the subjects of his broad body of work have included the spreading of tract houses along the Rockies; strip malls, parking lots, freeways, cheap motels and garishly lit discount houses; abused land and brutalized animals; the defunct orange estates of outer Los Angeles; the ruined forests of coastal Oregon, and the adult and child citizens of the new West as he finds them, often enough, marooned in bleak trailer parks or graceless rooms.

John Loengard on the role of the photo editor
Nothing is more important than the trust of photographers. Since they are not employees, but freelancers, photographers often operate from a disadvantaged position. Remember that:
· You are the photographers’ advocate. No one else will be.
· You are the photographers’ counselor, explaining the magazine to them and them to the magazine.
· You are the final arbiter when disagreements arise with other members of the staff. -

Photo shoot becomes lesson in business practices – SportsShooter
Throughout your career as a student photographer people will constantly try and pay you less than you are worth. The truth is, not only are you a photographer, you are a businessperson. I know that as a student you typically don’t have many business-related costs– you don’t rent an office, you don’t have assistants, you don’t encounter the same costs a “typical” photo business would, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t treat yourself as a legitimate business person.

Shop Talk: Equipment Insurance | Prime Collective
Last month I was robbed along with two colleagues of mine while we were sleeping. No one was hurt – we slept through the whole thing. But… they made off with about 10,000 in photography equipment and laptops. Luckily I was insured. After going through this experience I wanted to take the time to write about equipment insurance, which even if you have renters insurance or home owners insurance is worth getting because often times these policies will not cover you while you are traveling. Plus they often have higher deductibles.

The Woman in the ‘Family of Man’ Family
A lot has been said about this photograph, but Misha Erwitt (whose mother and sister are shown) says its greatest meaning comes from its place in his family.
