For the fourth year in a row, we hosted a full day of talks as part of our Luminance Professional Development Series – all meant to get photographers thinking about their business and inspired about new projects. Check out some of our favorite moments below. 

The company promises to provide an app that will let you recover your content from their servers before they shut down. That same app will also let you access the images and video on your current Clip or Clip 2 device using your computer, so the camera doesn’t turn into a $200 plastic brick when the company shuts down.

Forty-seven years after the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, it’s arguable whether there has since been anything like it. Baron Wolman, Rolling Stone’s first staff photographer, photographed the inaugural festival, which actually took place an hour’s drive from Woodstock, New York, in Bethel, New York, beginning Aug. 15, 1969. No one knew what to expect, he said, except the music lineup “was dynamite.”

Our Libyan friend told me afterwards that Gaddafi had gestured to me and asked who I was. “A photographer,” he was told. “Then where’s his camera?” he asked. His aide apparently replied, “I don’t know. Maybe he forgot it.’ It’s horrible standing with your hands in your pockets with no camera, watching something that’d be great to photograph.

In Aperture’s new exhibition Summer Open: Photography is Magic, curator Charlotte Cotton highlights the work of contemporary artists who employ a diverse scope of magical approaches to photography. The practices and techniques of the artists vary immensely. While some find their images in everyday life, others create intricate sets and stages, while still others rely primarily on digital techniques. Last week, I sat near the stage’s edge in the Paramount Theater to witness the ever-inspiring Look3 Festival in Charlottesville, VA. Hearing the presentations reminded me of the passion and conviction of the photographers who have dedicated years of their lives to specific projects. Having seen much of the work beforehand in exhibits and in online slideshows, I was struck at the inadequacy of those static presentation forms in audience engagement.
