What Are You Packing For the World Cup?
This month, hundreds of photographers around the world will be descending on stadiums in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and other spots around South Africa to cover the month-long sports story that is the World Cup. For the first time in its history, the tournament is taking place on the African continent, and photographers will have to adjust to covering the events in wintertime. We called on photographers—both World Cup veterans and newcomers—to find out what gear they’re bringing, how they’ve prepared, and what they’re most looking forward to about covering the most popular sporting event in the world.

Bruce Ely worked hard for several years to get behind-the-scenes access of an NBA team.
Portland currently has one major professional team, the Portland Trail Blazers. Each season since moving to Portland in 2000, I have been assigned a handful of games each season. The games were assigned to the photographer working the night shift on game day. For the first several years, I would request for some sort of behind-the-scenes access from the team, but was denied. I tried asking over and over and was met with the same response: No.
I wanted to change that answer. The approach I decided on would take an investment of both time and a little money.

Shooting the Taser Chase in Philadelphia – A Picture's Worth
when I see a great picture that was taken during a break in the action, like the one on Monday of a field-running Philadelphia Phillies fan getting hit with a taser by security, taken by AP staff photographer Matt Slocum, I take notice.

Sports Shooter Academy: “A Face Melting Experience”
The workshop lasts only a few long days, but in that time, I learned so much about myself and my approach to shooting and how I could improve. This is not just a shooting workshop – it’s a real learning experience. From the participants to the faculty to the assistants, the conversations I had, and the critiques I received, have pushed me to become a more creative and driven photographer.

'Many friends and colleagues warned me of the logistical nightmare that awaited me.'
Wow. What an experience. A little over a month ago, I was an Olympic Virgin.
The Vancouver Olympics was my first. A columnist, reporter and myself were charged with covering the entire 2010 Winter Games from Opening to Closing Ceremonies -with as much of a local angle as possible.

'Superman. Lone Gunman. One Man Band.'
“So you’re Superman too, huh?”
Those were the first words out of Chicago Tribune staffer Nuccio DiNuzzo’s mouth when we met before the USA – China women’s ice hockey game. Many of us there planned to leave that game early, and go from UBC Thunderbird Arena to Pacific Coliseum for the figure skating pairs short program.

Twenty Ten: African Media on the Road to 2010 (and beyond)
On 15 March, the international Twenty Ten website was launched to the public. The site features photography, multimedia productions, articles and radio programs produced for Twenty Ten, a partnership project by World Press Photo, Freevoice, Africa Media Online and lokaalmondiaal. The content is created by journalists in Africa and inspired by the world of football in the broadest sense. With support from the Dutch Postcode Lottery, Twenty Ten looks at the integral role of football in African societies as the first FIFA World Cup on the African continent approaches. All of the content produced is available for sale to media worldwide that are interested in football stories from a unique African perspective.

'I was just one of hundreds of photographers fighting for scraps like good photo positions.'
The dreams kept coming for at least a week after I got home from the Vancouver Olympics. I kept waking up thinking that it was time to get on the bus to Whistler or that I’d arrived at an Olympic venue without any memory cards
