Instead of interacting with my children today, I went through my extensive archive system (a box of dusty discs in the basement) and pulled out my favorite sports photos from the 2000s.

Football is easily my favorite sport to photograph. Combining peak action, great emotion and a sense of ritual and ceremony, football is not only a visual feast for the eyes, but also your camera. There’s a reason why up to 100,000 fans pack stadiums every weekend, planning days, weekends and even annual vacations around games.
Walter Iooss and Neil Leifer have had good and bad games. Like athletes, Nicholas Loomis reports, they got better through intense competition.

I was sweating out a prep football practice here in Florida when ESPN the Mag called with a cool last minute assignment. Always fun to see their name on the caller I.D. I was to jet off to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for the weekend to cover the University of Alabama Crimson Tide take on their bitter rivals – the University of Tennessee Volunteers. It got even better. I didn’t need to cover every-down, game action – just wander the stadium making pictures of what a true megafootball college program is all about.
When the Clinch Game finally comes around in the World Series it means there are more meetings, more thought put into your coverage and generally speaking, things turn a bit more serious than in the earlier games.

When mixed martial arts first came onto the scene, I didn’t care. I’d see signs along I-5 or ads in the Willamette Week for cage fighting, but I could never get excited. Perhaps it was shooting low-budget pro wrestling at dim armories in the past that turned me off. Not sure. Or thinking, “It’s not going anywhere. I’ll get that another time.” Well, that time has come in a big way.

As the boys of summer were just getting into the swing of things, US Presswire hired an unemployed Peter Toriello after he was laid off from Getty four months prior where he was in charge of the Getty’s MLB relationship. USPW announced Toriello’s hire as “Director of Global Sales and Business Development” on March 4, 2009. What they didn’t announce was that in addition to Toriello’s physical capabilities, they also obtained a valuable knowledgebase of information about how Getty was handling the MLB contract. With Getty losing the NFL to the AP, the MLB deal becomes that much more important to Getty’s cache. What is in question is what potential proprietary trade secrets might Toriello have taken and/or shared with US Presswire, if any?

In fact, due to the advertising downturn and the Chiefs 2-14 season last year, our paper reluctantly decided to skip sending me on the road to the final two road games of the 2008 season, marking the first time in over 20 years the Star had not covered a Chiefs road game. Combining the often blowout, non-competitive games with the reality of needing to save as many jobs in our department as possible made that an easy decision.

Unfortunately those of us not in Austin Texas will miss out on the party tonight as friend an inspirator Brent Humphreys unveils his monster Tour project with a show at Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop. In attempt to get us all upside the peloton Brent was gracious enough to go through full WTJ? race scrutineering.
