Just ask Roger May. He is a photographer who proudly calls himself an “Appalachian American.” Born in Kentucky and raised in West Virginia, he jokes that he enjoys “dual citizenship,” but he is serious about changing how his beloved region is portrayed. For too long, images that defined it were dominated by the usual visual tropes — of barefoot kids, rundown shacks and rutted roads — made at the dawn of the federal government’s war on poverty in the 1960s.

From water level, cruise ships can look like confounding, imposing towers—but in Jeffrey Milstein’s series of aerial photographs, “Cruise Ships,” the amazing designs of the floating behemoths seem clear and even beautiful. “Most of them have pools. They almost all have a putting green, a running track, a basketball court. The whole top deck becomes this kind of floating amusement park three football fields long. It’s an amazing construction,” he said.

For almost 45 years I have roamed the world, in search of images of upheaval; initially political and social, then later, religious. Retrospectives are best done when the photographer is no longer around – there will be no surprises then. Or so I thought until the National Museum of Singapore suggested I have one. It is now being shown in the Stathaus of Ulm, Germany. As I am still roaming the world, let’s just consider this retrospective, (with some humility – who knows how many more years I shall roam?)

“He really wanted to go skydiving but he wasn’t old enough. He wanted a piercing but he couldn’t risk an infection. He didn’t want to die a virgin, but he did. He wanted to grow up, be a drill Sargent or maybe a doctor. He spoke about kids because he wanted a lot but he was still a kid himself,” photographer Dania Maxwell said.

Ethan passed away July 3, 2014 at the age 12. He had brain cancer.

And while there are certain rules about which photos become paintings — family and friends take precedence — it’s also evident that he has experimented with many techniques, from the 19th-century Woodburytype, daguerreotype and Jacquard tapestry, to the large-scale Polaroid and modern-day hologram.

After viewing news photographs from China for years, one of my favorite visual themes is “large crowd formations.” Whether the subject is military parades or world-record attempts, mass exercises or enormous performances, the images are frequently remarkable. The masses of people can look beautiful or intimidating, projecting a sense of strength and abundance. Individuals can become pixels in a huge painting, or points on a grid, or echoes of each other in identical uniforms or costumes
