“I didn’t choose photography; it chose me,” said Ilse Bing (American, born Germany, 1899–1998). Bing was just a snapshooter until forced to hone her photographic skills to produce illustrations for her doctoral dissertation at the University of Frankfurt on an 18th-century architect. Then in 1929, on a university field trip, the 30-year-old art historian saw for the first time a painting by Vincent van Gogh. She instantly decided to become an artist—but not a painter. Photography “was the trend of the time,” she recalled later. And the newest trend in photography was the Leica, a small, lightweight German camera.

There is deep significance in Cheryl Dunn calling her solo show, LET THEM EAT CAKE, from both the era that she is now shooting and the area for which many of her best photos have come from. The original story is that during a famine around the time of the French Revolution, Marie Antoinette may have uttered that famous phrase, “let them eat cake,” in response to the protesting, starving peasants for which she was their royal. That disregard and lack of empathy has been perfectly articulated in Cheryl Dunn’s work, where from her studio near Wall Street in Manhattan, or just even on the streets of NYC, has captured the essence of protest, punk and outsider movements in the face of extreme wealth. While the kings and queens of our time are consolidating more and more power, Dunn has embedded herself into the counter-movements, the scenes of authenticity that continue to have a cultural stronghold on the ways we think and practice creativity.

The photographs of Joshua Dudley Greer are like small novellas that contain pathos, humor, and unfinished stories, where the every day and the overlooked are elevated to a place of uncomfortable beauty. I see the work like a series of film stills, those final scenes of a visual journey that takes the viewer through emotion and place, leaving us with one last look as the music and credits roll by. The work was created by driving 100,000 miles across a network of super highways, a journey that surely must have had it’s own inner narration and sense of altered reality. In the end, these are not ordinary road trip photos, they are a master class in seeing, the kind of seeing that comes from participating in the experience, driving with a heightened awareness to details. His practice of setting up the 4×5 field camera and on occasion an 8×10 camera, then making himself vulnerable under the black cloth, allowed him momentary quiet in a self-created confessional, where his art exists between two states of being, the internal and external.

Fran Forman has just released a tour de force monograph, The Rest Between Two Notes, published by Unicorn Books. Expanding on her visual narratives of composited photographs showcased in her first monograph, The Escape Artist, her substantial new book moves the work into a realm of richly colored capacious photo-paintings that explore space in a new way, leaving room for liminal and psychological moments and for the imagination to create stories of what might be. The compositions are dreamlike, filled with shadow and light and color, with figures that appear as if in dreams, moving through space with a sense of mystery. Fran finds inspiration in Caravaggio’s light intensive portraits, Edward Hopper’s use of light and shadow, the surrealism of Duane Michaels, the constructed tableaux of Gregory Crewdson, and cinematographers who employ light and shadow to increase tension, such as Michael Haneke, Errol Morris, and Dario Argento.

Four photographers, one men’s luxury fashion show in Milan, a big subject – as part of a collaboration between the Italian fashion house Zegna and Leica, female photographers were selected to deal with the subject of Men through Women’s Eyes. The four women, Queenie Cheen, Roselena Ramistella, Hélène Pambrun and Veronique de Viguerie, were behind the scene at the big event; their pictures take the viewers on a trip into a world to which they would normally have no access.
