Andy Spyra is a young photographer who has made documenting the impacts of the war and genocide in Bosnia his project. This year, the 26-year old was awarded the Oskar Barnack Nachwuchspreis for up-and-coming photographers. During his latest reports, Andy Spyra used the Leica M9 – a camera he appreciates especially “in the context of sensitive topics.”

Andy Spyra Exodus [ EPF 2013 SHORTLIST ] Christianity is on the edge of extinction in its birthplace, the Middle East. Escaping sectarian violence, kidnappings, religious fatwas, economic hardship …
via burn magazine: http://www.burnmagazine.org/essays/2013/11/andy-spyra-exodus/
Christians have always been part of the intellectual and economic elite of Middle Eastern societies and their migration leads to a brain-drain, sided with the withdrew of financial assets and, equally important, cultural and intellectual force. Unending Echoes of the Bosnian War: The Work of Andy Spyra – NYTimes.com
Mr. Spyra, a 26-year-old German photographer, is photographing the aftermath of the war in Bosnia, which claimed 100,000 lives before it ended in 1995. “You ask yourself how could this happen again after what happened in Germany,” he said. “You talk to the people, you talk to the victims of genocide in Bosnia, and I felt truly ashamed, standing there as a German and hearing these kind of stories.”
