‘From normality to madness’ French photographer Antoine d’Agata on capturing the invisible pain of war in Ukraine for Jonathan Littell’s new book — Meduza:

Just before Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, French-American writer Jonathan Littell and French photographer Antoine d’Agata traveled to Kyiv’s Babi Yar ravine, where the Nazis carried out one of the Holocaust’s largest massacres in September 1941. Littell and d’Agata’s goal was to document how the site of such enormous tragedy preserves its history and exists in the present day. However, Moscow’s full-scale war forced them to broaden the scope of their project to reflect a reality where war crimes are not just a horrific chapter in Ukraine’s past but a part of its daily life in the present. The resulting book, titled An Inconvenient Place, was published in French in late 2023

Atlas brings together Antoine d’Agata’s most recent work. The exhibition is conceived as an integral part of a cinematographic and artistic project begun in 2013 with the release of the film Atlas. An installation, White Noise, based on the film, is currently on view at Labanque as part of the exhibition Dépenses (curated by Léa Bismuth). This project has also given rise to an eponymous book publication, forthcoming from Éditions Textuel in October.

Odysseia

At the borders of Europe, migrants try to force their way into this impenetrable citadel. Migrants, a generic name for lives that are nonetheless distinct. Through photography and video, Antoine d’Agata distances himself from a sensational or dramatic approach. He gets right up close to the experience and the odyssey of these men and women. Their everyday lives consist of vagabond journeyings along roads, nights sheltered in makeshift tents, waiting for possible entry into port areas… However, the photographer is aware of the limitations of images, and adds words to them, just to be sure.

This month Magnum Photos releases Georgian Spring: A Magnum Journal, a group project for which ten photographers—Thomas Dworzak, Martine Franck, Mark Power, Alex Majoli, Martin Parr, Alec Soth, Jonas Bendiksen, Antoine D’Agata, Gueorgui Pinkhassov and Paolo Pellegrin—traveled to the Eastern European country to document the contemporary culture and national identity. The book is curated and published by Chris Boot, a former Magnum director in London.
