If you believe that Hipstamatic and Instagram could inspire tens of millions of people to become more interested in “serious” photography, then think of Mr. Lowy as a prophet urging others to abandon outdated and elitist ways.

When Ben Lowy was in Afghanistan taking pictures for our story “The Bad Guys vs. the Worse Guys,” he did so using both his digital camera, to make traditional 35-millimeter photos, and the Hipstamatic app on his iPhone.

The public today is more visually sophisticated than ever before. The overwhelming dearth of information available on the internet tends to weaken the impact of content. Important stories get lost in the fray. So as photographers – as creatives and not just journalists – we have the added task of developing a connection to our audience. We need an image that will engage the viewer, that makes our audience question what they are seeing, that allows them to take a step closer to the image and thus the content.
Photojournalist Ben Lowy was in Libya on assignment for 3 weeks in March, traveling between the Rebel stronghold of Bengazi to various front line towns like Ajdabiya, Brega, Ras Lanuf, and Bin Jawad. In between photographing with DSLR’s he made images on his iPhone and brought the news directly to an audience by immediately posting them to his blog

VII Photo Expands To Represent Non-Member Photographers: “The VII Photo agency announced a new division this week called VII Network, which will represent projects by photographers who are not VII members.
At its launch, VII Network is representing seven freelance photojournalists: Eric Bouvet, Jessica Dimmock, Tivadar Domaniczky, Balazs Gardi, Ben Lowy, Stephanie Sinclair and Donald Weber. VII Network will represent these photographers exclusively worldwide, says VII managing director Frank Evers.”
