In her project I am Waldviertel, Dutch photographer Carla Kogelman travels to the Austrian region of Waldviertel to the small village of Merkenbrechts, population less than 200. Here, Kogelman transports us into an eternal moment of fleeting childhood summers, a moment where time eclipses in that it is both fast with outdoor adventure, and slow with restless boredom—imagination and play often being its only respite.
Enter the far-flung (yet familiar) world of schoolchildren on the Eastern Cape and discover a richly portrayed environment, ripe for interpretation and even open-ended fantasy
My series, “I AM SOUTH AFRICA” reflects my stay in Eastern Cape. In this project, and others, my goal is to develop a visual language that leaves room for fantasy and interpretation. I want to show a world that is open-ended, a story with hope and creativity.

A prime example of an upcoming and hardworking talent is Carla Kogelman (1961, Raalte). A selection of her black and white children’s portraits was featured in New 2013 and presented with a World Press Photo award in 2014. Recently she received a grant from the International Festival Photoreporter in the Baie of Saint Brieuc which will give her the opportunity to document the Xhosa generation in South Africa and Kogelman was shortlisted for the Sony World Photography Awards. Considering her previous success, were curious to hear how her career had progressed and decided to catch up with the Dutch photographer whose work evokes that of the American Sally Mann.
