John White was a mentor and inspiration to many, including the New York Times staff photographer Michelle Agins. She visited him not long after he and the rest of the Chicago Sun-Times photo staff were laid off.
While everybody else was stunned and upset that The Chicago Sun-Times had fired its entire photography staff, I couldn’t stop thinking of one man. They did that to John White? The Chairman of the Board? That’s like the Bulls getting rid of Michael Jordan.
The Chicago Sun-Times made a surprise announcement last week: It fired its entire photography staff. Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist John H. White spent decades working there. He shares what this news means for him personally and for the future of
Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist John H. White was among the nearly 30 full-time photographers let go. White spent decades at the Sun-Times. He told Tell Me More that the firings have hurt the Sun-Times, but the future of photojournalism remains bright.

On Saturday, April 14, 2012 the Illinois Press Photographers Association presented John H. White with the first Keep in Flight Lifetime Achievement Award. Former Columbia College student, friend and John’s co-worker at the Sun-Times, Pablo Martinez Monsivais, flew in from Washington D.C. to present John with the special award.

One of these teachers has and still is teaching me about life is, Pulitzer Prize Winner John H. White Staff Photographer for the Chicago Sun-Times, who will be celebrating his 40th anniversary as a staffer in Chicago this summer.
