John White was a mentor and inspiration to many, including the New York Times staff photographer Michelle Agins. She visited him not long after he and the rest of the Chicago Sun-Times photo staff were laid off.

I am not naïve.
This is not new in the newspaper industry.
However, what was shocking was the wiping out of an entire staff in one fell swoop.
Doubly shocking was that one of those fired was John H. White, perhaps, the greatest newspaper photographer in the history of this great city.
My first thought was, “I hope he means John H. White.”
Several weeks later, he confirmed, that indeed, he was looking for me to hang out with John a bit for a cover story honoring John on the 30th anniversary of his Pulitzer Prize.

On Saturday, April 14, 2012 the Illinois Press Photographers Association presented John H. White with the first Keep in Flight Lifetime Achievement Award. Former Columbia College student, friend and John’s co-worker at the Sun-Times, Pablo Martinez Monsivais, flew in from Washington D.C. to present John with the special award.

I’ve been so fortunate to have had incredible teachers in my life. These teachers, from kindergarden (Ms. Lyons), and all the way up to college, have all pushed me to do better. One of these teachers has and still is teaching me about life is, Pulitzer Prize Winner John H. White Staff Photographer for the Chicago Sun-Times, who will be celebrating his 40th anniversary as a staffer in Chicago this summer.
