Since 1989, photographing Chinese young people has been a constant thread in my career, covering rock bands, internet hackers, entrepreneurs, factory workers and self-labeled “hooligans.” While I am ethnically Chinese, I am still an outsider who came with a preconceived notion of Chinese people as a monolithic bloc of conformity. One of my goals, then, has been to share the realities of diverse, nuanced lives in this most massive of mass societies — especially crucial in this divisive time of geo-political unease.

‘In any case, the subject was very fresh to me, exciting but also daunting because of the massive scale and steep learning curve (of which I’m still somewhere down near the foot). There has already been some good photo reportage on the trade, so when my editor Kathy Moran and I mapped out our coverage, we did our best to add new angles, looking at the loopholes of wholesale animal harvesting, captive breeding, and the exotic pet trade.

During the months he spent trekking through this city for National Geographic magazine, Mark Leong was on a hunt for glimpses of it’s underground. Years of Hong Kong cinema had colored his view of the place, rendering it a seedy scene beneath a vibrant subtropical metropolis.

In a sense, he went looking for what Ridley Scott called “Hong Kong on a very bad day.”
