If Photojournalism Is Dead, What’s Luceo?

James Estrin believes Luceo Images is a vibrant rebuttal to the notion floated by Neil Burgess that photojournalism died last month.

I realized that the success of Luceo is a very good rebuttal to those who believe photojournalism is dead. David Walter Banks, Kendrick Brinson, Matt Eich, Kevin German, Daryl Peveto and Matt Slaby are carefully laying plans for careers of 30 to 40 more years. They are all busy with assignments and working on personal projects. They look at the same circumstances Mr. Burgess did and come to an entirely different conclusion.

After having nearly a week in Baptist Town while on assignment in May, I decided to return on my own in early July so I could cement relationships and get to know the people I had been photographing without any time restrictions. It is wonderful just being able to sit on the porch with someone and not have to hurry off to make pictures elsewhere. So many images happen as a result of just being still.

After almost a year of being gone I was recently able to return to Southeastern Ohio. While it is no longer my back yard, there are few places that feel more like home. After we moved to Virginia the Sellers family left Chauncey and moved to the larger city of Columbus, an hour and a half north where the twins, Kacey and Lacey (now almost 9 years old) enrolled in the deaf school

Mr. Eich and Ms. Pruitt illustrate the huge shake-up in photography during the last decade. Amateurs, happy to accept small checks for snapshots of children and sunsets, have increasing opportunities to make money on photos but are underpricing professional photographers and leaving them with limited career options. Professionals are also being hurt because magazines and newspapers are cutting pages or shutting altogether.

Matt Eich, a student from Ohio University, has been selected as the 2008 SportsShooter.com Student Photographer of the Year by a panel of judges gathered together at the Adorama Camera Building in New York City, Thursday, February 26, 2009.

Matt Eich: The Good Struggle – Shoot The Blog

You’re 20 years old. You’ve just won the College Photographer of the Year award, and then your girlfriend becomes pregnant. Is this the beginning or the end? Matt Eich picked up his camera and precociously declared, “Nothing good comes without some sort of struggle.”

Not only is Matt an Eddie Adams Workshop alumnus, but he won the top prize in 2006 — a $10,000 grant from Nikon, the primary sponsor of the workshop to follow his own vision and shoot what he wanted. If Matt is representative of the new guard of photojournalists, we’re in good shape.

Eich, Sinclair Win 2008 Alexia Foundation Grants

Photojournalist Stephanie Sinclair is the winner of the 2008 Alexia Foundation Grant for professionals, and Matt Eich, a senior photojournalism major at Ohio University, is the student winner, the Alexia Foundation announced today.

The Alexia Foundation for World Peace was established by the family of Alexia Tsairis, an honors photojournalism student at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University who was a victim of the terrorist bombing of Pan Am flight #103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988. She was returning home for the Christmas holidays after spending a semester at the Syracuse University London Centre.
