Lyttle is an independent visual journalist in Los Angeles, having previously worked as a staff photographer for a number of newspapers in Florida for 15 years. She founded the now-retired A Photo a Day website, which led to the launch of “Geek Fest” – an annual celebration of photography that moves from city to city each year. And in all her free time, she serves as President of the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), bringing a new perspective and energy to a storied institution that is facing pressure from the online world and changing demographics.

On the Board of Directors, we talk a lot about the value of a membership, and I want people to know that their hard-earned money is being put to good use. Other than that, I’m excited with the direction our technology committee is going, helping to revive the clips contest, and bringing the magazine into the digital realm by making it more shareable and realizing the potential to use more video and photography online in our stories. Julie Jones is the recipient of the Joseph Costa Award, Melissa Lyttle is the winner of the Clifton C. Edom Award, Mickey H. Osterreicher is this year’s winner of the Alicia Calzada First Amendment Award, and John S. Hyjek is the Jim Gordon Editor of the Year. And Michael Laughlin and Mark Wetzel will be presented with NPPA’s Humanitarian Award.

NPPA’s highest annual honor, the Joseph A. Sprague Memorial Award, was announced in January during a memorial service for Washington Post staff photojournalist Michel du Cille, 58, who collapsed and died December 11 in rural Liberia while covering the Ebola crisis

Dear Newspaper Photographer,

If you think it’s all doom and gloom, it’s not.

I say that to remind you that you, scratch that… that we, still have the best job around. We get paid to take pictures for a living. We work for newspapers that people read, that are incredibly relevant to their lives, that reflect the good and point out the bad. We get the chance to cover our communities. And we know them better than anyone.
