The first foreign trip I ever made as a traveling photojournalist was to India to cover the funeral of Indira Gandhi and the sectarian violence that followed her assassination by two of her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984. I had moved to Paris in 1978 and this first assignment in India would mark the beginning of a new way of life for me, one of almost constant travel to more than 90 countries these past 26 years.

Peter Turnley – New York Street Photography: May 30th – June 5th, 2010
There are still a few spots open in the upcoming New York Street Photography Workshop from May 30-June 5th. This will be the third time it has been held. New York City in late spring and early summer is an amazing venue for street photography and a great place to create a photo essay/portfolio during this one week workshop. The daily workshop sessions are held at Peter Turnley’s apartment in Harlem, which also serves as a wonderful backdrop for this experience. The workshop embraces a “decisive moment” spirit of appreciating the reality of daily life in an urban setting. Turnley works with students to help them become comfortable with a sense of purpose in photographing people, and creating a photo story/essay.

It’s always great to receive a new visual essay from our friend Peter Turnley, TOP’s unofficial Foreign Correspondent. During the week before Easter, Peter was teaching a workshop organized around the world famous Semana Santa procession in Seville, Spain, and of course he used the opportunity to create his own photo story. This is new work, never before seen, first published here on TOP, as part of our ongoing cooperation with Peter to try to provide an outlet for new photojournalism.

Recently, I got wind of the fact that Peter Turnley is now teaching photo workshops in various locations around the world—workshops that people like you and I can attend—and that reports from participants had been, in a word, glowing. So I approached Peter (through my friend Steve Rosenblum, who has collected some of Peter’s work) and asked him about an interview.

20th Anniversary: The Fall of the Iron Curtain – Peter Turnley – The Digital Journalist
We parked our car and I positioned myself behind several protesters as Claudia asked two men to allow me to balance my camera on their shoulders, in order to make a long exposure without flash, of the lineup of Stasi and their dogs that were biting protesters. After making many images, I was suddenly swept off my feet by several undercover police officers. I was sure that I would lose this important film as I was taken to a paddy wagon and asked to surrender my film and cameras.
