Ten photojournalists have been awarded $1,000 each for the Yunghi Kim grant—a grant meant to bring awareness of the importance of copyright registration.
The 2016 recipients are:
Frank Fournier, Carol Guzy, Amnon Gutman, Derek Hudson, Dania Maxwell, Myriam Meloni, Jackie Molloy, Rick Rocamora, Ann Wang, Rony Zakaria
When Rick Rocamora left his career selling pharmaceuticals to become a photographer in 1990, he was guided by the advice and encouragement of everyone from Eli Reed and Ed Kashi to Gordon Parks. He has been paying it forward ever since, serving as a mentor to a new generation of Filipino photographers, both in Manila and among his native country’s far-flung diaspora.
A stream of images from Hong Kong caught Rick Rocamora’s attention on Facebook: black and white street scenes, with dramatic light and compositions that ranged from kinetic to serene. The fact that the photographer, Xyza Cruz Bacani, was from the Philippines — like Mr. Rocamora — intrigued him, though he was reluctant to contact her.
