It was an incredible honor, a very humbling experience, that left me nervous and intimidated. It was incredible to hang out with many photographers who I still look up to, hang out with many talented colleagues, and to get a glimpse of our future through the eyes of this year’s students. Eddie is gone now, but his wife Alyssa keeps inviting everyone back, opening her home to a cast of characters each year, and the great people at Nikon continue to generously fund this incredible experience

It all started with a pre-dawn phone call in the winter of 1992 from George Honeycutt, then Director of Photography at the Houston Chronicle (in those days, George worked from 6am-2pm, and I…..well, I did not). Working as photo editor of the school paper and co-editor of the college yearbook, I was just getting to bed some mornings as George was showing up for work. Anyway, the phone rings, and there’s a gruff voice on the other end of the line, “Seale, you got any tickets?”
In those days, the Chronicle had great company cars, full size Ford Broncos, and they even issued one to the intern, so your driving record, not just your photo ability, was a consideration.
So with my unblemished driving record intact, I began one of the most formative experiences of my life: a summer internship at the Houston Chronicle.

My charge was to photograph Wall on the Kentucky campus in an iconic and easily recognizable setting. Lexington is an absolutely beautiful area, but the horse farms, race tracks (Bourbon distilleries?…..just kidding.) and the like were out due to the limited time we had with Wall, and oh yeah….it was about 24 degrees, completely overcast, snowing off and on, with 20-30 mph winds that day!

Sports Shooter Newsletter Decade Collection
CLICK NOTE: Of anything I’ve posted all week, these are fascinating looks into the experiences behind photographs by great photographers. You’ll all fixate on different photographers, but each of these is worth taking a minute of your day for. And they’re not all sports, by the way.
As this decade ends, I wanted to commemorate its passing by collecting images from these special people that have helped me over the years. I asked them to select an image of theirs that is historic, unique, revealing or memorable.
Most of all, I wanted the image to be something personal … an image special to them.
