Between 2008-2018, seventeen emerging photographers from across sub-Saharan African completed the “Photographer’s Masterclass,” a decade-long mentorship program curated by Simon Njami and the Goethe-Institut, which has resulted in the publication of the sumptuous compendium, The Journey: New Positions in African Photography (Kerber Verlag).
Thabiso Sekgala, whose images of the restricted homelands established under South Africa’s apartheid regime have been exhibited internationally, died October 15. Market Photo Workshop, the Johannesburg school where Sekgala studied, announced his death on
“Not only was he one of the great post war photographers, he was also one of the most generous people I have had the privilege to meet,” Martin Parr, President of Magnum Photos said in a statement, “his contribution to Magnum and his unrivalled ability to tell stories and entertain us over this time will be part of his enormous legacy. Our thoughts and best wishes go out to his family.”
