A Prize-Winner's Personal Insight

Ross Taylor learned how personal experience gave him insight into the lives of his subjects. On Tuesday, he was named a Photojournalist of the Year in the National Press Photographers Association awards.

The National Press Photographers Association announced on Tuesday its final group of Best of Photojournalism 2012 winners. Ross Taylor of The Virginian-Pilot was chosen Photojournalist of the Year (Larger Markets), and David Weatherwax of The Herald, in Jasper, Ind., was named Photojournalist of the Year (Smaller Markets). The freelance photographer Donald Miralle was chosen as the Sports Photojournalist of the Year, and Brad Vest — who started on Tuesday as a summer intern at The New York Times — won the Cliff Edom “New America Award.”
