    In a recent Facebook post, New York Times writer David Gonzalez confronted photojournalists who make photographs of protests. “Fotogs: What do you value?” he asked. “Now is not a good time to start handicapping which image of Black suffering will get a Pulitzer. Especially when your POC [people of color] colleagues are worried about their families, lives and community.” Veteran photographer Joseph Rodriguez suggested in response to the post that photographers are making the “same ol’ same ol’ images of death, disease, poverty, violence. It is the DNA of several news photo contests.”

    For his entire administration, Trump has continually bashed the media — calling it “lamestream” and “fake news” and, worse of all, “the enemy of the people.” Perhaps then it should come as no surprise that the media was a target for violence and attacks all over the nation during its coverage of the protests.

    “That book is enormous!” cried my wife upon spotting Entering a New World, the new monograph by Italian photographer Massimo Vitali. Her reaction is a good summary review. Every aspect of the book is gargantuan. It’s more than 14 inches across, 11 inches tall, weighs 6.4 pounds, and covers ten years of shooting. For most of his career, Vitali has used large-format cameras to absorb acres of subject matter all at once, every corner reproduced in exquisite detail. There are no half measures here. Instead, we are presented with a full-corpus embrace of the world.

    ON FRIDAY NIGHT—as mass protests sparked by the deaths of George Floyd, in Minneapolis, and Black Americans in Kentucky, Georgia, and elsewhere convulsed America—anchors with WAVE 3 News, the NBC affiliate in Louisville, Kentucky, were conversing on air with Kaitlin Rust, a reporter who was out covering protests in the city, when Rust cried out twice. “I’m getting shot,” she shouted.     On Thursday afternoon, hundreds of protesters converged on Union Square, in New York City, to join the outcry over the police killing of George Floyd, in Minneapolis. Chris Facey, a student at the School of Visual Arts and a father of two girls, attended the demonstration. The police used bikes to form a barricade, in the hopes of keeping the protest contained to a single corner of the square, but, as Facey put it, “everything started spilling out.” He witnessed police officers shoving protesters and hitting them with bikes, “bending their arms in places they’re not meant to go.” More than seventy people were arrested. According to the police, several officers were injured. (On Friday, a new round of demonstrations—and arrests—took place, in Foley Square and at the Barclays Center, in Brooklyn.)

    Several tens of thousands of dead and wounded, over a million refugees. The civil war in Donbass has literally erased entire cities and villages from the map, staining with blood the soil of the European continent for the first time in the twenty-first century.

    These are two chapters – Alina and Blind Pit – of my Donbass Stories,  which came to life with the idea to portray as main characters those invisible actors affected by the civil war in that region.
