I’m quite happy with my work as a commercial location photographer the last 18 years and thought I would add my two cents on the new Leaf Aptus II 10 back and my experiences and how I came to my decision. I went back and forth trying to rationalize the purchase of a high-end digital back the last several years. In the film days, I enjoyed shooting with my Leica Ms, Canon F1s and Eos 1’s, Hasselblad 203’s, Mamiya 7’s, Fuji GX617’s, Fuji 6×9 rangefinders, and Contax 645. I enjoyed shooting with all of these cameras for different reasons and I grabbed the best tool suited for different jobs. Plus I like variety.

I have always had a fascination with Mt. Everest. There is just something about being on top of the world that is ever appealing. So when I finally decided fly to Nepal with two weeks notice, I knew that this birthday would be one to remember. Operation Everest Base Camp would commence with the intention to reach Base Camp on October 29, 2009. I will preface this by admitting that I have not seen the inside of a gym in more than 6 months and the last mountain I climbed was more than 3 years ago. But I was determined to trek and do so without a guide or porters.

I remember when I first came across Maria Luisa Morando’s exquisite work. It was in 2008 at Photo LA, in the photoeye Gallery booth. Her large, all white prints were framed in white and a contrast to the riot of imagery that surrounded it. The images were quiet, bleached out, as if looking at a dream, and I was completely transfixed. Whatever shapes or colors were able to emerge from the whiteness were like jewelry, tiny slivers of turquoise
“The photographic vision for the magazine is not one that I can any longer be considered a good fit for,” Simon Barnett said in an e-mail. He added, “Pictures tend to be used as part of an overall design conceit, not as art in and of itself. I think it’s called modern, which would seem to make me old fashioned.”
Statesman staff photographers Jay Janner, Rodolfo Gonzalez and Ricardo B. Brazziell recall their photo coverage of the Fort Hood shootings and aftermath in this video produced by Jenni Jones.
Photo Editor Robyn Lange sent me a note the other day alerting me to these camouflage images by Liu Bolin, which she thought I would like. And I did indeed! I also found out that Robyn is a hilarious emailer, and has some excellent perspectives on freelance photo editing. So, I made her do a formal interview for le blog. I hope you like! Here we go.
Michael Wolf’s project, “Architecture of Density,” focused on Hong Kong’s exteriors, but when people began to ask him what the insides of the buildings he photographed look like, he decided to bring his camera indoors. Through a friend, he met a social worker who took him around Shek Kip Mei, which was scheduled to be demolished because of its age.
This is a blog about photojournalism, so I want to tell my story about how I photographed this historical event. At 2:21 pm I was in downtown Austin covering a funeral when I got a news alert on my cell phone about the shooting in Killeen. Eleven minutes later I got a call from my editor telling me to hit the road and follow staff photographer Rudy Gonzalez who was already on his way there.
