    From Josh Spear, Trendspotting:

San Francisco-based photographer Geoffrey Ellis’ photo journal blog Sadkids is aptly named: its coverage can be as blue (with posts entitled “Sometimes, progress can suck it” and “Burn Santa burn”) as it can be lighthearted and youthful (”Easter valley of the sun” and “Hawaii + Halloween = Hawaiiloween” come to mind). But no matter the mood, the imagery featured has the same lovingly cluttered, colorful aesthetic as Ellis’ self-published photo zine of the same name, now in its fifth edition. The winner of the Bay Area’s Phelan Award in Photography, Ellis chose the name for his photo collections as a tribute to 1960s paintings featuring large-eyed kids, cats and dogs in the style of Walter and Margaret Keane.

From what it all looks like: Heidelberger Schloss:

Sitting with my back against the wall, Mitch and I gathered determination for a midnight hike from inside a glowing yellow bar in the center of Heidelberg. Looking down the establishment and through the giant front windowns I could see the castle glow hit the clouds. We climbed up the path to the castle gardens, walking through soaking orange patches of streetlight mixed with night. I saw the steps into the garden and the dark shadow where my dad hid and scared me over fifteen years earlier. So good to be back.

  • From 5B4:

Two of the most embarrassing displays of booksigning insanity have happened at Robert Frank events. At the public library a couple years ago, physical altercations broke out. At a recent Steidl event at Walter Reade theater Robert was visibly uncomfortable when a crowd descended upon him with open books. One dealer who had lent his book as an example during the actual discussion opportunistically approached Robert to sign his book while on stage. That copy appeared for sale online within a couple days along with “ephemera” from the event. Had the guy had identified himself as a bookseller and asked Robert if he’d sign the book so the he could make an extra 500 dollars do you think Robert would have signed the book? Josef Koudelka had an event at Aperture last year and expressed his disappointment afterwards in finding many copies posted the next day on Ebay. He told me he’d never do that again..

From Advertising – Newspaper Ads Expected to Show Up to 30% Drop – NYTimes.com:

Publishers will start to report first-quarter results this week, but people who follow the industry and have had a glimpse of the 2009 numbers say it is clear that once again, even the most pessimistic predictions were not dark enough.

    From Webby Nominees:

With nearly 70 categories, Website entries make up the majority of Webby Awards Winners, Nominees and Honorees. Some are beautiful to look at and interact with. Others are a testament to usability and functionality. And a handful excel across the board. To be selected among the best is an incredible achievement worthy of praise — and perhaps a little bragging.

  • From SB2 video – The Basics of Copyright and Licensing at Strictly Business:

Copyright and licensing together are the business backbone of our industry. Both are rapidly evolving. Changes to copyright law are soon expected and the licensing model, as we once knew it, is under seize. It is important to note that as the process evolves, the premise is still here.

From RESOLVE — the liveBooks photo blog:

Going back into the mid ’80s when I first started to sell photographs, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. No one was calling me up.  One of the big misconceptions now is that people are calling us up all the time to buy photographs. That’s not how it works in general.
