Alec Soth unveiled The Last Days of W., his first foray into self-publishing, at Paris Photo this fall. A collection of images he’s created over the last eight years, the 48-page artist’s book was printed on newsprint and priced at $17 in what he says was a nod to the current economic crisis. Soth also made a limited edition, which includes a signed placemat made from a photograph he took of the President’s empty chair and desk in the Oval Office.

My personal choice: …Would be to take the plunge, be a mensch, and make the call between the D700 and the A900, with their opposing but unsurpassed strengths. For many others, I’m sure, the Canon’s “strong compromise” will be the way to go. (And bear in mind I’ve completely ignored the Canon’s video capability, which many shoppers will not do.)

You can look up landmarks like the Pyramids of Egypt or the Great Wall of China, as well as more personal places, like your ex’s house. But for all of the places that Google Maps allows you to see, there are plenty of places that are off-limits. Whether it’s due to government restrictions, personal-privacy lawsuits or mistakes, Google Maps has slapped a “Prohibited” sign on the following 51 places.

What you are seeing is not an actual scene but something more like a video collage. Imagine the famous “bullet time” scene from “The Matrix” — Keanu Reeves is suddenly frozen in time, and the camera revolves around him as he dodges bullets — only instead of using still cameras, as they did in “The Matrix,” the filmmakers used 200 of Toshiba’s Gigashot HD camcorders, mounted on a circular rig. This technique of looping and layering, dreamed up four years ago by Mitch Stratten, who directed the ad and calls the approach “timesculpture,” has never been used before.
